When it comes to the Czech Republic, there is one place I visit often: the Punkva Caves. It’s like walking into another dimension that is quite the opposite of the real world and can be rather mysterious and somewhat magical. I have been there many times, and I can’t even remember how many, but every time was like the first time.
Let me take you on a little tour, just like I’d do if we were there together. You’d love it. Trust me!

Getting There is Half the Fun
The caves are in the Moravian Karst area, which is more like a natural playground. It is always green here, especially in spring or summer, and the air is clean and refreshing. You can take a nice casual hike or take a cute little tourist train to the entrance. I prefer to take the train since we have little kids as it’s enjoyable and feels like a holiday train ride.
When I was young, my parents used to bring me here, and I recall saying to myself, “This is like a fairy tale!” As an adult, that wonder is still as strong as ever. The journey to the caves itself seems like an exciting journey.
Walking Into the Depths
As soon as you enter the cave, you don’t really feel like the world that exists above even exists. It’s great because these massive rock walls surround you and cool you down when it’s hot outside. The hike into the caves takes approximately half an hour. Honestly, it is like a nature gallery!

It has all these cool icicle-like formations called properly stalactites and stalagmites sticking out on the ceiling and the floor. Some are shaped like icicles, some are like large candles, and some are so peculiar that one is left wondering what they are. I like creating images from them – “Look, it’s an angel!” or “This one is a witch hat!” It is pretty entertaining to let the child within come out here.
The guides do an excellent job of describing how these formations can take thousands of years to form, and every time I hear that, I’m like, “Wow, patience goals!”
The Macocha Abyss: A Jaw-Dropping Stop
One of the most exciting things to do is to look into the Macocha Abyss, a sinkhole with a depth of about 450 feet or 138 meters. Staring at it, I feel both fear and curiosity when I look down into it. It’s so pretty yet creepy at the same time. I often think of how the first explorers could have felt when they found it.
The name for this formation is “Macocha,” which translates to “stepmother” in Czech. The legend says a rather creepy story about an evil stepmother tossing her stepson into the void. Creepy, right?
The Boat Ride—Pure Magic
Now for the part I enjoyed most, the boat ride. After the caves, you get into these small boats and sail through an underground river. It’s so silent that you can only hear the water droplets falling everywhere.

The boat guides take you through narrow tunnels and open chambers, and they always have something to say. One of the guides once said how “romantic” it is, and a couple in our boat started blushing. Everyone cracked up.
One of the areas is a rather small passage with a very low ceiling, and one has to bend. It’s exciting, like, ‘Am I going to get through this without hitting my head?’ Spoiler: you will! But it’s still fun to pretend that you won’t!
Why I Keep Coming Back
You would expect that after coming to Punkva Caves so many times, I would get tired of it, but nope. The magic never fades. Each time I bring another person, I see the visitors’ expressions of amazement—shock at the Macocha Abyss and a lot of ‘Wow, this is amazing.’ That is why I love it.
Also, it’s a great way to escape the hustle of the outside world. Down there, there are no wireless connections, no ways to divert attention, only the world’s beauty.
A Perfect Day Out
It is even more exciting that Punkva Caves are not only caves, and that is what makes them even better. There is much to see and do in the Moravian Karst area. After this, you can hike through the other trails within the area, which are quite beautiful. Or if you are like me and are passionate about food, why not have some food at one of the local eateries? The Czech food is even more delicious after a day of walking around the city.
What’s more, it is very family-oriented. I always see many families with kids here, and they are as thrilled as I was the first time I came over. This made me remember when I had my own adventures as a child.
Tips for Your Visit
If you’re planning to visit—and you should—here are a few tips from me:
- Book in advance— The tours get booked quickly, particularly in summer.
- Wear comfy shoes— The paths may be a little slippery sometimes.
- Bring a jacket— The caves are always cool no matter how high the temperature is outside.
Enjoy the whole area. Next, go on trails around the caves or head to the restaurants for food. Moravian cuisine is so good.
Let’s Go!
That’s it for my little ode to the Punkva Caves. It’s one of those places that feels like home to me, even though it’s underground! When in the Czech Republic, do not miss it. So, if you ever come by, don’t forget to leave me a comment and tell me what you think of it!
Until then, happy exploring!
