Hey there, travel enthusiasts! Let me take you on a little journey to one of the most magical places I’ve ever been: Hrad Buchlov, also known as Buchlov Castle.
This gem is in the Chřiby Hills of Moravia and will always be dear to me. If you are passionate about visiting beautiful castles, rolling hills, and other off-the-beaten-path, this might as well be your future travel goal.
I have often been to Buchlov Castle, but I wanted to make it even more special this September. I didn’t just want to roam through its medieval corridors or admire the castle tower’s views. No, I actually saw it from a hot air balloon! And yes, it’s just as charming as it sounds. Allow me to begin with the castle first!
Buchlov Castle on the Ground

The first time I visited Buchlov Castle, I was about 10 years old. My family used to live in a nearby city, so we visited the castle and the surrounding area often. Eventually, we moved even closer—now, we can actually walk to the castle from our house, and it takes less than an hour.
Constructed in the 13th century, this castle has witnessed numerous historical conflicts, royal scandals, and centuries of rich history. As you enter, you feel transported back to medieval times.

The tour is a must! Inside the castle walls, you’ll find weapons and artifacts from centuries ago, a small chapel, a collection of priceless historical items, and much more. The guides are great, especially when it comes to telling local legends and the tale of the Black Lady, who is believed to haunt the castle. I didn’t see her (thank goodness!), but the stories add a touch of spooky charm to the whole experience.

And then there’s the view. Oh, the view! Going up the castle’s tower was more challenging than it seemed; it was quite a climb and a bit exhausting, but the view up at the top was amazing. On a clear day, you can see the surrounding forests, hills, and even neighboring Slovakia. It’s the kind of view that puts you in your place in the best way, where you look at the world and all its potential.

The Magic of Buchlov Castle from the Sky
Let me share my hot air balloon experience with you. Flying over Buchlov Castle was one of the best parts of the trip and one of the best experiences I have ever had.
It began with a late September afternoon drive to a neighboring village where the balloon team prepared for the evening flight. Watching the balloon fill up as the sun slowly set toward the horizon was an experience in itself. It’s the feeling that you’re standing on the precipice of something great and are about to set on a journey that will change your life.

Once we got on the hot air balloon, I couldn’t help but feel happy. The view of Moravia from above is picturesque. The Chřiby hills, in particular, seem to be a large field painted in shades of green and yellow, and there are small villages in the valleys like illustrations from a fairy tale.

And then there it was—Buchlov. From above, the castle seems like a gem on a green velvet belt. You can see the square court, the high walls of the fortress, and even the road leading to it. Looking at it this way made me realize just how amazing it is.

What makes it so great to fly over an area such as Buchlov is that it seems like a fairy tale. The castle appears to belong to another world, with all its medieval-like architectural designs. One can only picture knights, kings, and secret passages leading to hidden rooms right below the building.
Local Tips for Your Buchlov Adventure

The best time to visit is from May to October. Around Buchlov, the hills transform into a lush green blanket that later turns into a golden sea with shades of peach, red, orange, and yellow—it’s as if nature is putting on its best outfit just for you. The climate is perfect for castle tours and ballooning, and you can also enjoy many local festivals during this time of year.
Bring Good Shoes

The castle sits atop a hill, and the trail is uneven. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as you will surely regret it if you wear the wrong shoes halfway through.
Savor the Local Cuisine

After your tour, make sure to visit Buchlovice, a charming town at the foot of the hills, to enjoy some authentic Moravian food and desserts. You must try svíčková, a creamy beef dish, or the local koláče, a delicious sweet pastry. I’ve always loved enjoying local cuisine after a full day of exploring.
Book the Air Balloon in Advance

This is widely done, especially during the fall season. Try to reserve a spot a few weeks in advance so that you can ride.
Why Buchlov Should Be on Your List
Buchlov Castle is more than just a building; it’s an experience. It makes you feel like a part of it, whether walking through its corridors, climbing its towers, or even looking at it from the air.

For me, it’s not just a castle! This is close to my heart; it’s a connection to the place, the stories, and the environment I grew up with. Each visit brings me back to the memories of why I am in love with the Czech Republic and Moravia region.

So, if you’re planning a trip to the Czech Republic, do yourself a favor: put Buchlov on your list. If a hot air balloon ride is on your bucket list, this is your chance to check it off. Who knows? Maybe we’ll cross paths among the castle walls.

Happy travels, friends!
