Our Amazing Hot Air Balloon Experience in the Czech Republic

This past September, my husband and I had one of the most thrilling and unforgettable experiences of our lives: going for a hot-air balloon ride in the beautiful landscape of the Czech Republic. It was a tale that started long ago in the small town of Buchlovice and turned into a fairy tale. Let me take you through our journey, from the idea to the final landing.

A Dream Years in the Making

In my childhood, I used to see hot air balloons flying in the sky while I lived in Buchlovice. The company that controls them is located in the next village on the other side of the hill, so the balloons were a familiar sight over our roof and yard. It was fascinating as a child, and I would then try to imagine how it would be to glide through the air. Still, I never really believed that one day I would join the ranks of the fortunate few aboard one of those balloons. Life is full of surprises, and life has always had ways to amaze us!

Fast-forward a few decades. My husband’s 40th birthday was around the corner, and I was looking for a birthday gift that would be special, one-of-a-kind, and memorable. A hot-air balloon ride came into my mind, and I felt it was my destiny to take that ride. It was local, something we had never tried before, and it was also cool. I bought the tickets and could not wait to give him the surprise.

The Wait Was Worth It

It was the perfect plan, or so we thought, but then life happened and decided to throw us a rather unexpected wrench in the works. The next year, while preparing to fly to the Czech Republic, we discovered I was pregnant. Ballooning while expecting? Definitely, not the best idea! Unfortunately, we had to wait another year to fulfill our plans, but trust me; the wait was worth it.

Finally, the day arrived. The day we selected for the meeting was a beautiful September late afternoon, and excitement buzzed in the air. Upon arrival, we met the crew, who came in two trucks towing two large balloons. We felt at ease as they started unloading.

Getting Ready for Takeoff

Some crew members provided us with the necessary information and guidelines. We were taught how to get into the basket, what would happen during the flight, and how to come down. They suggested wearing hats to shield our heads from the burners’ heat, which was especially helpful for me.

It has to be mentioned that I am terrified of heights, so there was a lot of anxiety combined with the anticipation. What if I got scared and started to panic while flying? What if the basket felt too small? However, as the balloon was gently released from its tethering on the ground, all my worries disappeared. It was the most gentle, serene feeling I have ever felt. The world below grew smaller, and I was amazed.

The Magic of the Skies

Once we got into the air, I could not help but smile. The view was breathtaking. We sailed over roofs, fields, and woods and saw them becoming smaller and smaller below us. Then, I saw my childhood home, which evoked a strange but deeply nostalgic feeling. As we rose into the sky, Buchlov Castle perched on the hill like a king overlooking its land.

It was as if the country had been painted right before my eyes: houses, fields stretching as far as one could see, hills that were the homes of many, streams flowing across the grasslands, and wildlife roaming free.

We also had a chance to meet deer, wild boars, and rabbits running around the territory. It seemed like something out of a fairy tale.

It was such a calm and quiet place up there, and I had never felt such calmness. The only noise was the hissing of the burner and the wind rustling through the trees. This was one of the few times I could communicate directly with nature.

The Search for the Ideal Landing Zone

The flight took about 45 minutes and covered a distance of 15 kilometers. As an evening approached, the crew began searching for a suitable landing spot. Finding the right field wasn’t easy, but they delivered.

Finally, we found a clover field, and the pilot gently brought the balloon down. The landing was smooth and rather enjoyable. Having been instructed to stand with our feet pointed in the opposite direction of the landing, we found ourselves on the ground the next thing we knew.

A Special Tradition and Farewell

We assisted in deflating and folding the massive balloon, which was quite enjoyable. When all the items were loaded back into the trailers, the company cars ferried us back to the initial point of departure. When we returned, four hours had passed, yet it seemed as if it had been just a few minutes.

The adventure, however, did not end there. The crew surprised us first-timers with a ‘christening’ ceremony. This lovely ritual included a glass of champagne and a certificate to commemorate the event, making the day feel even more special and celebratory.

Reflecting on the Experience

In retrospect, I am happy that everything worked out as planned. Since I was a child watching balloons fly away, giving my husband this gift and experiencing it with him made me feel that life had brought me full circle. The trip was everything we could have wanted and more—relaxing, exciting, and emotional.

I encourage anyone considering a hot air balloon ride to go for it. Whether you are here with family or friends or have a special event to celebrate, it will leave you wondering about the world and your life. Click here for more hot air balloon information regarding the company that we flew with.

I’m so glad we decided to embrace this adventure and that the Czech countryside was the perfect setting for it. As we soared through the air, I felt thankfulness and happiness that would always be with me.
